Adjunct faculty play a critical role in education but they face desperate conditions with substandard pay, no seniority, and in most cases no benefits and healthcare. There are 30,00 such faculty in California and according to organizers the AFT-CFT and CTA refuse to fight for equal pay for equal work and full benefits in negotiations with community college districts. Dr. Syed Khaled Hussain is an adjunct faculty member at East Los Angeles Community College who was elected to the AFT 1521 Executive Board. When he began to challenge the corruption and the systemic discrimination, the union president James McKeever and union lawyer Lawrence Rosenzweig attempted to coerce him to resign his position. When he refused, he was suspended without a hearing.
