AFT sent this out but it is interesting that not all AFT members received it. Thank you to Sandy who made sure we saw it.
If you’re in a CFT local, you should take this survey at aftvotes.org.
AFT has committed to make a candidate endorsement based on rank and file input this time, and though this first survey is too generic, it will get you into the system for further input.
Comment: At the end, where we can type in other issues, I typed in that WEP and GPO need to be abolished, or at least anyone whose combined retirement from all sources such as STRS, PERS and Social Security total less tha $5,000 per month should be exempt.

  1. Email I sent to AFT President Randi:
    Randi,
First of all, thank you for caring enough about Adjuncts to even ask us, in a survey, what our lives are like.
I did take the survey and frankly, I had problems with three of the questions.
Questions 7 and 8 asked about our “pay per unit” but did not want an hourly rate. Unfortunately the survey did not tell us how YOU wanted it calculated. For example, did you want us to take our hourly rate times the number of hours we teach per week times how many weeks we teach? That would have been logical to me. For me, the answer would have been $1,530 but that was not one of the options we could choose. What did you have in mind?
Both questions 7 and 8 dealt with this so they are the first two questions.
The third question I had a problem with was question 35. Frankly Adjuncts are screwed in the hiring process. It definitely is not transparent. Adjuncts are not given consideration. In Industry, companies pride themselves about hiring from within and what a positive effect it has on morale. That doesn’t happen here and my local, AFT Guild 1931 says they can’t do anything about it, blaming it on Title 5. Sure, they negotiated that at least a certain number of Adjuncts have to be included in the interview stage, but is that what you mean? That a district going through the motions satisfies the phrase “given consideration??”
If we have been teaching at the same district for over a decade, we deserve more in the hiring process.
    Sincerely,
    Carlynne Allbee
