- Whew! Make sure to frequently evaluate your quality of life.
Do you expect to be one of the lucky ones who gets a full-time tenure track position?
- Statistically, it’s not going to happen.
Do you love teaching and are willing to do it for low pay because you love it so much?
- You will probably find better volunteer opportunities where you can help more people who really need it; community colleges, even the public ones, are run like for-profit institutions, where your colleagues are middle managers and students commodified throughput.
So why bother?
- Many of use have found that supplementing our non-academic gigs with a class or two can be both rewarding and help make ends meet.
How to get a job as an adjunct?
- Go through the official application procedures for all the districts in your region.
- Send resumes to Deans and Department Chairs in your field.
- Make follow-up calls just before the semester starts when they might be scrambling to find someone.
- Use the the California Community College Registry for contacts.
