After graduating from Grossmont College, I was struck by the difference between those teachers, who really wanted to teach us, and the professors I encountered at the four year colleges and universities. Their focus seemed more about the "publish and perish" atmosphere. It iinspired me to get my Community College Instructor Credential, which was required at the time. Even after I completed my MBA, it still took me awhile to finally get a job as an Adjunct Instructor. When I was hired at Mesa College, I was told the position of Adjunct was a way of getting your foot in the door. That people would then know who you were, how good a teacher you were, etc and that it would help when full time positions opened up. I have been an Adjunct at Mesa College since 1982, and during that time, have also taught at Grossmont College and Heald/Kelsey Jenney College. And yes, I have tried many times for a full time position. While working as an Adjunct, my full time job (to pay the bills, support my horses, etc) I have worked as an Accountant with companues in various industries. This gives me a lot of personal experience to share with my students.
