At one of our Adjunct get togethers, a fellow Adjunct said she had heard that because of Guided Pathways coming, ESOL classes were being dropped. SDAFA is Adjuncts helping Adjucts, so I took it upon myself to find out if this is true.
It is NOT.
First, the change has nothing to do with Guided Pathways.
Second, the program is being restructured so naturally courses have to be renamed and the new name is ELAC ie. English Language Acquisition.
According to the IN SUPPORT A NEWSLETTER FROM THE INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES DIVISION Volume 2 • Issue 6 • March/April 2018 Page 5 of 5 :
Beginning fall 2018 the new English Language Acquisition (ELAC) curriculum will replace the existing English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) curriculum.
ELAC 15, the first level of the sequence is designed to provide non-native English speakers with skills to integrate reading, writing, grammar, and oral communication.
ELAC 23 and ELAC 25, the courses in the second level of the sequence, focus on academic listening and speaking skills.
ELAC 33 and ELAC 35, the courses in the third level of the sequence, provide students with high-intermediate to advanced listening and speaking skills.
ELAC 45, the fourth level of the sequence, provides students with advanced integrated reading, writing and grammar skills. Upon successful completion of ELAC 45, students are prepared to take English courses.
The new curriculum also provides students with opportunities to take co-requisite courses to help them accelerate through the program
If you go to the actual page, you will also see a chart that I was not able to copy. Again, Page 5 of 5 https://www.sdccd.edu/docs/ISPT/newsletter/In-Support-Newsletter-March-April-2018.pdf
